About the Project
The International Knowledge and Information Centre (IKIC) is a cross-border initiative committed to public safety.
Directed by lead partner Maastricht University, this project aimed to improve resilience during cross-border crises and disasters within the Euregion Meuse Rhine (EMR) by offering education to rescue personnel, citizens and public servants.
As crises do not stop at borders, all three target groups should be aware of the risks in their own and neighbouring regions and know how to responds during a crisis or disaster. New threats should be taken into account, as well as questions related to nuclear safety.
To be able to offer scientifically sound and didactical education, universities, research institutes and education institutes bundled their strenghts to form a consortium for the IKIC project. This led to an online e-learning platform comprising 15 e-learning modules, as well as educational Virtual Reality simulations and in-person trainings. Educational material is supported by over 20 scientific reports produced by the consortium, and has been tested and evaluated by over 300 testers. The consortium has further developed a German version of the Emergo Train System, as well as a trainer pool and a catalogue of regional Simulation Centers. In addition, the IKIC project contributed to the academic community by publishing three scientific articles in international journals, contributing to several conferences and organizing an international workshop on cross-border mechanisms in Brussels.
